English at St Francis de Sales

At St Francis De Sales Infants, we understand the enormous responsibility we have to ensure our children begin their educations with an enthusiasm and love of reading and writing. English is a core subject and is a medium for accessing the whole curriculum. Fluency in English is an essential foundation for academic success and its mastery will prepare the learner for independent learning and most aspects of our everyday life. Our ambitious curriculum is rooted in quality texts and underpinned by our whole school love of reading. Through our text-based approach children are immersed in a wide range of both classic and contemporary texts, opening doors to author’s they previously may not have known. All texts have been carefully selected to widen children’s vocabulary, develop empathy through literature and deepen their enjoyment of reading. Through these texts and extracts we offer children real opportunities to write. They are able to develop and showcase their writing knowledge and skills though our well-planned progressive curriculum.
