We Love Reading

Reading is at the very heart of our learning in Saint Francis de Sales. We aim to foster within the children a love of reading, which they will carry throughout their lives.

Reading takes many forms in our school and the children are provided with a wealth of experiences and opportunities which promote reading.

We use a range of different schemes in our teaching of reading and phonics, including, as well as using quality texts whenever possible to nurture a love of reading.

Types of Reading at Saint Francis de Sales

Guided Reading – This takes place daily. The Teacher and TA works with a small group of children with a focused reading of teaching. The children are taught a range of reading strategies, such as applying their phonic skills, reading on for meaning and using pictures for clues. We also work as a group to develop fluency and expression.

Independent Reading – Each classroom has a class library stocked with high quality books. We encourage reading for pleasure throughout the day and each group has a session in the library during guided read. The children also have reading provision outdoors should they want to read during play times.

Shared Reading – Using Big Books to read as a class. We talk about the books, looking at the language and layout. We look at the style of the author, characters’ viewpoint and how punctuation is used.

Home Reading – The children in Reception take a reading book home twice a week. The children in Key Stage 1 take home a reading book with some challenge and are encouraged to change their reading books often. Children also take home a book from the library each week to share at home with their family members.

Reading Ambassadors

Our Reading Ambassadors this year have been voted by their class friends to help to promote reading in our school. They have been so busy attending meetings, making posters for World Book Day and sorting books in our school library as well as keeping their class libraries tidy! They must be exhausted. Their next task is to help me spend some of the commission we earned from the Book Fair to buy some new books for us to enjoy! What an enjoyable task!

Stay and Read

We would like to say a big thank you to all the parents who attended our. It was really enjoyable. We encourage the children to take time out for reading each day and we hope that you can find the time too! The children loved having their families come in at the end of the day to share their favourite books. Again, our Stay and Read event was a huge success so thank you. There was a real buzz around school.  We will let you know when the next event is.

Lunchtime Reading Club

We have been keeping our Reading Pledge to read for ten minutes each day. Here are some of our children enjoying reading at lunch time.

We Love To Read At St Francis de Sales

Beauty and the Beast

We really enjoyed watching the production of Beauty and The Beast in school. How lucky are we to have the story come to our school? We really enjoyed singing along to the songs. Year 2 are now looking forward to acting this out in the classroom and writing all about it. We will be reading lots of alternate traditional tales and we will be comparing them to the originals. I wonder what twists to the stories the children will come up with? Let’s hope they all have a Fairy Tale ending.

Library Visits

The children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 have really enjoyed visiting the local library over the last two weeks. A big thank you to Irene for the sessions she did with each class. They were really fun and interesting. We are now going to make sure that fill in our forms so we can get our library cards as soon as possible. We will be just like Harry in the story eating lots of books.
